| WUSGC at MAGC 2012 Solo Guitar Competition Guidelines |
| 1. ELIGIBILITY |
| 1. Any MAGC attendee over the age of 14 may participate in the competition. 2. For the first time, non-MAGC participants may participate. Non-MAGC participants must first take part in a preliminary round (prior to camp) to determine eligibility to participate in further rounds of the competition held the week of camp. This special round for non-MAGC participants will be by electronic or postal video submission (cost $50, deadline 6/30). All subsequent rounds will occur during the week of camp (schedule TBA July 5) in the evening after regular camp activities have concluded on the campus of MAGC. |
| 2. PRIZES |
| 3. This competition is only for those in middle and high school only, or no older than 18. No camp attendee already in college at the time of the camp may participate in the competition. Previous MAGC Solo Guitar Competition first place winners may compete again in their age category after two years. |
| Prizes shall be awarded as follows: First Prize : $300 and full tuition to MAGC 2013 (Courtesy MAGC) Second Prize: $200 and half-tuition to MAGC 2013 (Courtesy MAGC) Third Prize: $100and one-quarter tuition to MAGC 2013 (Courtesy MAGC) Final award amounts may increase based on number of participants. |
| 3. REPERTOIRE |
| ONE PIECE will be selected by the adjudicating commitee for performance by all competition participants; this piece will be referred to as the "Set Piece." The set piece for MAGC 2012 is Capricho Arabe by Francisco Tarrega. The set piece shall be performed by each participant at each stage of the competition rounds. In addition to the set piece, TWO MORE PIECES of the participant's own choosing shall also be prepared, with the total performance time of all three pieces not to exceed 12 minutes. |

| 1) There is a $50 charge for those MAGC participants to take part in this competition. |
| 5. HOW THIS ALL WORKS... |
| MAGC Participants: Beginning Monday night of the camp at 6:30pm, participants will perform in a closed-forum for their adjudicators. Each will play the required "Set Piece", and some or all of their other prepared selections. Depending on the total number of partipants, the competition rounds will continue as such each evening as needed. Non-MAGC Participants: As stated above, one must first be selected to participate through a preliminary round via electronic or postal video sumbission. The videos are due at Webster University with all fees and applications by June 30, 2012 (see application). Those eligible to continue on in the competition will be alerted by July 5, and given a schedule of competition rounds to be held the week of camp, July 15-20, on the campus of MAGC. On Friday, four finalists will perform in front of all campers, guests and the adjudicators at a 7pm adjudicated performance. Awards will be announced after the closing Ensemble Performance later that same evening. |

| Solo/Ensemble Ratings (All Ages) |
| We extend the offer of the opportunity to play, either as a soloist or in an ensemble (hence the name), in order to receive a rating of I, II or III (plus adjudicator's written comments) to all participants REGARDLESS of age. The cost for participating is $25/soloist. Ensembles pay $25 for the first member, and $15 for each additional member (for example, a duo would be $40, a trio $55). All participants will receive a written critique of their performance along with tips for advancement, and a certificate (or certificates, if an ensemble) from MAGC 2012 showing their rating. Note: This activity is different from the participant's daily regular ensemble class. |
| MAGC 2012 Junior Solo Guitar Competition Guidelines |
| Students 13 and under may participate in thise event. Participants must perform for a panel of judges to determine their ability to continue int he competition levels. The set piece, Opus 35 No. 22 (No. 5, Segovia ed.) by Fernando Sor, must be performed at each level. Participants should also prepare at least two other pieces of contrasting styles, not to exceed 8 minutes of music (including set piece). Finals will take place in an open-audience setting on Thursday evening. The three top-prize winners will receive a certificate and cash prizes of $75, $50 and $25. Cost: $35.
